Happy Happy Holidays!

As I'm spending my first Christmas with my boyfriend in Los Angeles, surrounded by my loud and obnoxious yet wonderful Filipino family, I wanted to share some sentiments from John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Tagalog

I love giving gifts.

So, interwebs, this post is a gift to you.  A wish that you have a happy holiday and a reminder that even the most unattainable things are within reach (if you want it).

Happy Holidays!

p.s. Yoko is looking for more languages!  So click on the link at the beginning of the post to see if a language you're familiar with is missing!

Euphemisms

My boyfriend has taken to telling people that I sell "marital aids."

For some reason, that euphemism makes me cringe.

At first, he used it to explain my Goddess job to his family.  Now he just does it to mess with me.

For one thing, I feel like it just sounds gross for some reason.  Maybe it's the fact that it's a euphemism makes me feel that I'm being sneaky.  Then, there's the implications.

Let's break it down, shall we?

Calling them "marital aids" implies that ONLY heterosexual married couple can purchase and use them.  What a way to pigeonhole the product!!!  You can't even just be committed...you have to be in a legal union.

When I Googled "marital aids," the first site listed implicitly says "If you are 18 years of age or older AND married, please enter. Browse the many selections for both you and your marriage covenant lover."

I almost wasn't sure if they were going to ask for a marriage certificate.  The website focuses on the fact that romance is only allowed if Christ is part of the marriage, and they even offer a complete package of goodies that includes "Intimate Bible Studies."  Oh, my!

Interestingly, this just doesn't seem the case with me.  I don't often do co-ed parties, and usually the co-ed parties aren't just for couples.

For the most part, people assume that I'm out to replace a partner.  I often explain that I'm not out to replace anybody, but that we're enhancing the situation.  How will you know how to please your partner if your partner doesn't even know how to please themselves?

So, I'm done ranting now.  I've also convinced my boyfriend to us "adult toy" instead.

(412): Vibrator and massage oils got stopped at security. Super.

Well...I'm personally hoping that they had lube somewhere else and weren't using the massage oils for lube!

Is it obvious that I think too much like a Goddess?

Also, they probably should have taken the batteries out of the vibrator...that might help depending on how "dangerous" it looks in the X-Ray.  That way, the batteries won't be losing power when they're not in use on the plane ride. ;)

The Social Worker and Goddess Collide

Living the double life has been tough in the past couple of weeks.

In my day job, I've engaged in multiple conversations about the state of the middle school students.

Things have been getting excessively rowdy, lots of walking out of class, lots of snide comments from the kids, lots of dating and sexual insinuations.

The hardest part about working in a school system is seeing where the system is failing.  And truth be told, the system is failing the kids in three-fold.

Several years ago, you'd think you were walking onto the set of a movie or t.v. show.  Strange announcements were being made on the PA system.  Kids were running rampant around the halls.  The older male gym teacher (who was really quite a pleasant person..at least to me...) was in charge of teaching Health (and possibly Sex Ed) to the middle school students.

Well, while things have changed, they've only become slightly better.  The announcements are no longer strange, but are followed by strange crackling and beeping noises (a la LOST).  Kids are strolling around the halls now, but there's a slightly faster response to it.  And the older male gym teacher was replaced by a younger more active female gym teacher (I've never seen the kids do jumping jacks...it was awesome!!!!).

BUT, there's no Health or Sex Ed.

Education is Broken

In the 4 years that I've been at this school, I've seen a lot of things that just wasn't right.  But I feel like the lack of sex education is possibly one of the things I struggle with on a daily basis.

Part of what I do with the students is turn them into little activists and help them find their voices.  We work on "community service" projects together that they are able to choose and implement.  Almost every year, I can bet that one of the projects that students will suggest will have something to do with sex ed.

One year, a class wanted to set up some AIDS/HIV prevention, but that idea was shot down by the principal.  Another year, a class wrote and performed a skit about teen pregnancy.  This year, a class suggested distributing condoms in Downtown Boston, and a separate class suggested implementing a sex ed class.

This was the final scene of the play where the main character did a monologue speaking with her newborn daughter,
talking about the possible difficulties she would be facing.
I teared up something fierce.

Amazingly, these ideas came straight from the students themselves.  The struggle I feel comes from wanting to be able to provide accurate information, but knowing that it's not my job to do so and I could possibly get in deep trouble.

So, where does that leave us?  It's possible that the kids will be receiving health or sex ed in the spring (perhaps because spring is the only time they'll really need it?).  Regardless, the kids are basically begging to be educated.

Meanwhile, I've heard all kinds of stories, mainly from the adults in the building, about kids fooling around with each other, making out in the stairway, or having sex over the weekend just to have the male talk smack about the female on Monday.  It's horrifying really.

I'd love to be able to distribute information to the students.  A pamphlet.  A website.  Something.  Anything!

On one point, of course kids shouldn't be having sex.  I personally believe that if you don't even know your basic anatomy, you probably shouldn't be engaging in any sexual behavior.  I wouldn't be surprised if the middle school kids (ranging from age 11-14) wouldn't know their anything about their clitorises (clitori?) or their prostates.

But why don't we start there?  Why don't we start at basic anatomy?

In fact, why don't we just start with sitting down to have a conversation?

*Le sigh*

I wish I had an answer.  I wish I was able to do something about this major issue before I move on to a different job.  But this is systematic.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I'm not giving up quite yet.

It has made me consider how to combine my day and night jobs to benefit children and families.  It's still a work in progress, but the spark is there.  Oh, yes...the spark is there.

Video: Alf Leyla Wa Leyla

After more than a year, I've finally uploaded a video of myself dancing.

This was the first time I asked to be part of a Talent Show that was separate from my dance classes.  I was so nervous!  But it was a great experience.

It was awesome to have people recognize me throughout this weekend and compliment me on my dancing, asking me questions and such.

So, I hope you enjoy this video :)

Filipino Fusing with Middle Eastern?

Before I started belly dance classes, I decided that I needed to learn a bit about my own cultural dance first.  Though I was involved with the Filipino Student Association at my undergrad, I never made it in time to join the dance troupes.  However, there was a one-semester class for Filipino Dance.

As the class fulfilled a graduation credit, two of my friends joined me in the class.  Though it was a small group, it was quite an enjoyable class.  I learned a lot about the regional differences in the dances, and how most of the traditional dances are choreographed for specific stories or purposes.

For example, as the music and dance reflects the culture, there are Christian, Muslim, and Indigenous dances.  The Christian-style dances reflect the Spanish colonization, featuring a lot of 3/4 beat music and socializing dances.  Muslim-style dances reflect the influences from Indonesia and other Southeast Asian cultures, and mainly tells stories.  The Indigenous dances are more drum and kulintang-based, and are more ritualistic.

My favorite part about the dances was the focus on the hand and arm movements.  While it was so many years ago, I remember the teacher talking about the importance of grace in the arm movements.  However, there wasn't necessarily much room for improvisation.

Nonetheless, I'm suddenly struck with the idea of fusing traditional Filipino dance movements with Middle Eastern dance.

I feel that I have to brush up a bit on the movements in Filipino dance.  I know there is a Fhilippine Dance Company in Boston, but it doesn't seem very easy to get in touch with someone who could point me in the direction of classes.  I might try to go through Boston University's Filipino Student Association, perhaps use my powers as an alum - no matter how minuscule they might be.

In the meantime, here are some clips I found on YouTube:

"My name is Cecilia, and I'll be your Goddess this evening."

Names have power.

Naming things has power - for better or for worse.

Names can be changed in order to remove or increase power.

Names are identity.

I personally love my name, in all its Filipino-ness, individuality, Simon & Garfunkel ode-inspired, and significance.

I've often thought about my name and how it relates to my persona.  As I'm living a daytime life and a nighttime life, I know I can separate the two as not everyone knows about my belly dancing or my "night job."  But the one thing I feel that I can't separate is my name.

In belly dance, it seems that most dancers have a stage name.  Shira provides a great article about the process of deciding and finding a name.  Though I know it's not a necessity, there is a lure in creating a whole new personality just by changing my name.  The idea of being able to throw away all your cares and dance the night away is quite attractive.

Yet, I find it hard to give myself a name without giving the rest of me the cold shoulder.

So, I have considered a couple of names, most of which obviously has some significance to mermaids.  Serena, the Spanish and Filipino word for "mermaid."  Jullanar or Dyullanar, a mermaid that shows up in Thousand and One Nights, with the second version in the Filipino way of spelling it.  Dyesebel, the name of a Filipino mermaid, popularized by written stories and film.

Dyesebel as a tv show in the Philippines...must...watch.....

But...I also really like my own name.  I don't know if I feel that I'm being dishonest about who I am if I take on another personality?  Maybe it's that I feel like it would become just another thing for me to carry?  Maybe I feel that if I'm going to learn as much as I can about Middle Eastern dance, that I need to go into it fully by giving myself fully, and that includes my name?

*shrug*

I don't know.  But for now, as I'm not a professional dancer, I'm satisfied using my own name.

In my Athena's business, one that would require me to separate my night life with my day life, I proudly use my own name.  Again, I feel like I can't create a whole different persona to match this other part of my life.  It's almost exhausting just thinking about having to create a different persona.

Though, clearly, I would try to be careful about whom and what I talk about my night job, I still feel like who I am as a Goddess vs. who I am as a social worker needs to be compatible in order for me to even exist.  With all my quirks, all my sillyness, and all my passion for helping you find your inner Goddess, what you see is what you get.

More recently, a new acquaintance told me that she was joining Passion Parties.  Now, I don't know much about that company other than that they're based in San Francisco.  At first, I was pretty bummed that I didn't have the opportunity to recruit this person.  But, then I was really excited that someone was joining the team of women (in all the different companies) that try to bring others passions out.

Personally, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Athena's.  The fact that this business fell into my lap was clearly fate.  Starting with even the name of the company, highlighting the Greek Goddess of Wisdom as opposed to the Goddess of Love, I knew that I would be very comfortable.  The geek in me that loves Greek myths absolutely perked up.

Then, there's the mission of the organization:
Our Mission: To empower women down the path of sexual education in the safe, comfortable environment of their own homes by offering only the highest quality products presented by a trained Athena's Goddess.
Right up my alley.  Ever since I became sexually active, I've strongly believed that one should be educated about sex before engaging in it.  In my 3 years of being a Goddess, the hardest part for me has been meeting girls who have engaged in sex not fully knowing their bodies or what pleases them.  I'm not asking for folks to take an anatomy class or to study up on sex before getting into it.  But even just to get to know your own body...it's something.

Goddess

I take the role of Goddess quite seriously.  I wear my Goddess pin proudly.  I did not hesitate tacking that onto my name and persona.  While it's still an addition to my name, it doesn't feel like a further extension of who I am, or another thing to carry.

As I've mentioned in a previous post, I've been juggling all my roles.  I think that holding onto my name as an integral part of all the things I engage in will help keep me grounded and rooted.  As I mentioned in the beginning, names have power...I think I'd like to keep both.

Athena's Cup! Bras for Boobies!

Let's face it.

Boobs are pretty awesome.

What's not awesome, however, is breast cancer.

1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.

The chance of dying from breast cancer is 1 in 35.

There are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone.

Though a lot of progress has happened in the way of breast cancer research, more still needs to happen.

Join Athena's Home Novelties in our fight against breast cancer!!!

Join Athena's Home Novelties in breaking the Guinness World Record for the most bras hooked together!!!
can you spot me? I'm (of course) wearing green!

Adult Versions of Disney Princes

These images are popping up everywhere...so, I had to share as well.

Why, yes...that is Prince Eric from Disney's "The Little Mermaid."

First, I was like...Whoa.....then, I was like, Well, hello there Prince Eric....

I gotta say, though, I love the "Fish Fetish" tattoo on his arm...absolutely classy...

Some of the images are really quite hot for sexed-up cartoons.  Then, there are some I absolutely disagree with (like the one of Peter Pan...yet, I'm still posting the link...hahaha!).

A couple of things are true, however.  The artist, "David Kawena," is absolutely fabulous...and you will find at least one image that will raise your eyebrow.

"I've Never Had Sex..."

Have you ever played the game "Never Have I Ever"?

It's a fun and interesting game to play with friends and with people you've never met.  I believe the game also has different variations in the names, such as "10 Fingers."

For the over 21 crowd, it's a guaranteed good time as a drinking game, and for the younger crowd you can really gain some insight about who your friends are and what you'd like to try next.

Basically, one person says the statement, "Never have I ever..." and finishes the sentence.  Those who have done whatever the person noted has to take a drink or put down one finger.  Now, it could be as benign as never having left the country.  But it could, and often does get personal...very quickly!  By the end of the game, you'll know who's been the naughtiest of you all.

"Afrita Hanem: The Genie Lady"

In my self-imposed bellydance education, I've been getting movies off Netflix, but mainly instructional movies.

Then, I realized that I could learn some more about the art, its movements and its history, through actual films.  One actress/dancer in particular that caught my attention was Samia Gamal.  It's a name I'm familiar with mainly through others in the bellydance community, but I'd be lying if I said I knew who she was.

Luckily, I found her on Netflix.  Specifically, I found "Afrita Hanem:  The Genie Lady."

Samia Gamal as Afrita Hanem

Here's how Netflix describes it:
The fortunes of down-on-his-luck crooner Asfour (Farid Al Atrache) change overnight when he discovers a mysterious lamp housing a charming genie (Samia Gamal) in this sweet comedy. She can make anything he wishes come true, so he asks for help in luring his distracted girlfriend from the charms of a rich competitor. But Asfour soon learns he should be careful what to wish for, as he soon realizes his heart may lie elsewhere.
Here's how Amazon describes it:
Meet Asfour (Farid Al Atrache), a poor singer/actor who stumbles upon a magic lamp and its wish-granting genie (Samia Gamal). When he uses his new-found power to woo his gold-digging girlfriend away from her rich suitor, Asfour discovers that his genie has a few wishes of her own. Sure to delight and entertain, this classic film stars two of Egypt's cinematic legends in an innovative and endearing blend of comedy, fantasy and musical genres.
I could write a review about the movie.  But, reviews are out there already, as story descriptions are already out there.  So, I just wanted to talk about my impressions of the film and about some of the things that I learned.

I hope this doesn't come across in a wrong way...but films not made in the US are so similar!! One thing that struck me about the film was that the actors were also singers or dancers or musicians, which I've also seen in Filipino media.  Bollywood is one major example of the multiple talents that get exhibited on the big screen.  It just makes sense that all the mediums would melt together in one way or another.  Personally, I definitely enjoyed listening to Farid Al Atrache's "Asfour" croon about his unrequited love, as his character was also a singer.  I'll be honest here, I listened intently to the songs in the hopes of hearing something familiar.

Also, similar to many of the cheesy movies in the Philippines, there's one character who provides the comic relief.  Ismail Yaseen's character, "Bou'ou," was quite a clown, pulling some physical gags and hilarious facial expressions.

Then of course, there's the beautiful Samia Gamal.  Yes, she is a fabulous dancer - though I was almost surprised by how little she actually moved around.  But her face lit up the screen.  She was so graceful and elegant.  If you want to learn about having presence as a bellydancer, or even as a lady, she's a great role model.  In a way, she reminded me of Carmen Miranda...mainly because of their huge smiles.

See?  Smiley!

Another thing that reminded me of Carmen Miranda was how she represents an entire culture and art at the time.  It seems like "Afrita Hanem," which was released in 1949, was somewhat meant to attract audiences from around the world.  This seemed to be a time when all "sirens of the screen" fit a specific mold - sexy and talented.  Even though the costumes are different, their ornate clothes were quite similar in imagining the "exotic."

The fact that Samia Gamal played a Genie in this movie also seemed interesting to me, as it just brings out stereotypes of the Middle East.  Though she's been in dozens of movies, this was 1 out of 3 movies of her's on Netflix - and one of them is only a collection of clips from other movies.

Finally, and most importantly, I thoroughly enjoyed that Samia Gamal's characters, Kahramana the Genie and Semsema the Dancer, were both very independent and outspoken women.  Though Kahramana was more focused on getting the guy and Semsema was more interested in the job at first, I liked that they would say and do whatever they wanted.  Kahramana's mischievous actions were hilarious - causing little bits of trouble for the main character, also the only person who could see her.  Meanwhile, Semsema continuously yelled out something that translated to "No way, Jose!" in the subtitles.  Hilarious!

I'm sure I could go into a whole Women's Studies tangent about how Samia Gamal was still very much under the control of the male main character, as he was her master as the Genie and her boss as the Dancer.  But they were gifts meant to enhance his life if he were willing to open his eyes and heart to the possibility.  They loved him for love, and not because of his assets.

Not a bad lesson for a movie in the 50's.

Toy Etiquette 101

So, I've already blogged about how to keep your toys in tip top shape with Sex Toy Care 101.  Now for another 101 course in Toy Etiquette.

Aren't toys just meant to replace partners?
No.  Most definitely not.  Our business isn't to replace people.  Toys are meant to enhance sexual experiences.  If you think your sex life is absolutely perfect and doesn't ever get boring, then you probably don't need sex toys.  But for the rest of us who like to change it up once in a while, a toy can be great for couples.

Yes, masturbation is a great single-person activity.  But every so often, you can bring your partner into the situation.  Let your partner handle the controls.  Let your partner watch.

Of course, if you're finding that you'd rather play with your toy than your partner...that's a whole different story, and probably a whole different blog post altogether.

What if I have nosey and curious guests?
Yikes.  No one likes nosey guests.  If you have a closet full of toys that you'd rather not share with the whole world, make sure it's in your bedroom.  If you have many guests over for a party, use the bedroom as a coat check, and keep the door closed most of the time.  Don't be a careless host and be conscious of what your guests are up to.  Most people wouldn't want to find out after the party that a priceless vase was broken and no one took responsibility for it.  I personally would want to know where my guests are and what they're doing.

You also wouldn't want to give them a reason to pry.  Make sure you put your toys away in a safe, clean place if you know people are coming over.  Yes, that includes your lube, lotions, and feathers.  If you don't want to give people ideas, don't let them see anything that would make them do so.

If you don't have the usual places to stash your toys, such as the bedside table drawer, Athena's carries 2 great products that protect your toys from prying eyes.  The Toy Box is a great place to hide your favorite couple of toys.  For the more advanced, we also carry the Adult Toy Chest.  All the pouches are equipped with Velcro(C), so it's easy to find exactly what you need.  I am currently using the Toy Chest for all my demo purposes.

Toy Chest

If I change partners, is it okay to use the same sex toys?
The answer to this question really depends on the person.  If you placed some emotional attachment to the toy in relation to the person, then it would probably be very difficult to re-use sex toys.  However, if the relationship was more casual, then you might be more willing to keep that toy.

This video was posted on jezebel.com, and I think it answers this question perfectly.

"Can I Use My Old Vibrator With My New Partner?" from Pot Psychology on Vimeo.

Now, obviously - and regardless of the situation - you want to keep your toys clean!  Depending on the material of the toy, it will hold on to the bacteria if you don't wash it.  Really, you could almost use this same advise for children's toys, which often get passed down to younger siblings.

Was that too gross of an analogy?  Sorry...

******

So, these are just the basics of Toy Etiquette 101.  The take away message?  Don't forget that while taking care of yourself is mainly a single-person activity, it doesn't mean it should intefere with another person's self care.

Dancing to Live (Music)

When I first moved to Boston 5 years ago, I knew that I wanted to continue taking belly dance lessons.  Since I considered belly dance a hobby, I didn''t realize that I would feel as passionate about the art as I do now.  While I don't consider myself a professional yet, I think it's something I'm considering more and more with every new experience.

I've had the pleasure to interact and learn from fabulous dancers, and I look forward to continuing my dance and music education. Through the different teachers, I've been exposed to opportunities that I've never thought I would be a part of.

Well...let me backtrack for a second.

I've done some performing for most of my life - from piano recitals to orchestra and band concerts in high school.  Perhaps because of my being trained classically, I've always been freaked out by improvisation.  Even in jazz band, I was so unsure of my abilities that I didn't think that I could possibly pull off something as musically awesome as some of the old songs I love.

When I was in undergrad, I participated (performed and directed pieces) in the Queer Fashion Show.  I loved that whole experience!  Working with large groups of people and putting together an entertaining peice...oh, then the performance!  I loved it.  But I never performed on my own.  I felt that the people who I performed with were like my backbone, giving me strength to go on through my anxiety.

When I began to belly dance, I anticipated a lot more troupe performances.  When recitals would come around, I would get extremely nervous.  I had to psych myself up, just saying to myself that I've done this before, there's nothing to worry about.

Four recitals later (in 2008), I gathered enough courage to perform at a casual talent show in Vermont.  It was the first time I had sought out dancing alone for a group.  I was so nervous!  I couldn't even tell you about the massive amounts of butterflies in my stomach and the bullets I was sweating afterwards.  But throughout the weekend, I received so many complements.  People I didn't even know were watching came up to me in the days following my performance, complementing me and asking me about my dance background.  It was an exciting feeling.

(Celebration of Expression, Photo taken by Cat O.)

Later that year, my fellow social workers and friends organized an event that created a safe space for women to express themselves.  One friend read erotic poetry, another friend shared her baking wisdom, and I danced.  It was my first time performing a full routine (though broken into sections) for a live audience.

2008 seemed to be the year I finally had enough "belly dance balls."  Prior to the last two shows I wrote about, I was given the chance to dance with the Jewels of Jamal at the Athenian Corner in Lowell, MA.  This time was different.  This time, I danced to live music.  Amira Jamal had been preparing us for this experience through all her classes, encouraging us to dance to songs we weren't familiar with.

(Athenian Corner, Photo by Albert Ma)

All of her lessons were flooding into my head at that moment.  Don't forget to smile, make sure your hands are "alive," move around the floor.  I'm surprised I didn't fall over from all the thoughts in my head.  In the end, I survived.  I knew that dancing to live music was another goal to add to my list of accomplishments.

Athena's September 2009 Update - New Goodies!

Saturday, September 19th
Sales meetings are always quite entertaining.  We get to listen to tons of speakers that help us get re-energized about our business, from booking parties to recruiting new Goddesses and Adoni.

But, I'll spare you the business...it's Business Time!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you a preview of the New Products of the Holiday Season 2009 in Pictures:

Gel'n Bath!
Create a sensual sensation in your bath, then dissolve it away!  Doesn't stain and all natural.

Sex in the Shower!
Products to give you leverage!

Hand Solo!

Tickled Pink!
The Celebrator's Larger Cousin.

Under the Sea!
Life IS always better down where it's wetter!

Spellbound!
Wickedly priced, don't you think?

Obviously, if you want to see and feel the toys, you'll have to book a party now won't you?

Athena's September 2009 Update - Sheri Winston!

Just when I thought things couldn't get any busier, the weekend of September 18th came along.

But, oh!  What a weekend!  Here's the lowdown:

Friday, September 18th
The Goddesses received a very thorough and anatomically correct Map of the Clitoris from Sheri Winston, who was celebrating her birthday that weekend.

Why, yes..that is a vagina cake!
(If you want to see more pictures, email me, and I'll send you a link to my Picasa)

Though she had introduced us to all the erectile tissue that women have back in our April Sales Meeting, this almost 3 hour seminar allowed us to delve deeper (pun intended!).
